I tried to importing the updated server list from the mIRC website, but nothing came up. Do I need to do something to the file called servers?

You only need to replace your old servers.ini with the new one.

Well, I support that. For the average user who isn't very smart on a computer, if the extension is there, they are likely to rename the file without an extension and then not be able to open it. As tech support, I've seen this too many times to count. It's rather annoying. For anyone who knows what they are doing, it's easy to enable viewing of extensions (and showing of hidden/system files for that matter).

True, but this is because of extensions for known file types
being hidden by default and that is what the average user
is used to seeing. It seems silly to me to just hide something
that people may or may not understand. IMO this is a problem
when it comes to security. They're told that they should not
run EXE, BAT & COM files (among many others) if they do
not know what it is, well guess what, windows recognizes
these files, so with this enabled, this is no longer one of
those files. How secure is that? Todays average pc user is
less knowledgeable everyday because of the pc becoming
more candy & sugar coated everyday. Some people may not
understand what the safety on a gun does, let's just hide it
so they don't have to worry about it, or they may not
understand how to properly fasten their safety belts in their
cars, let's just hide them so they don't get confused,
hmmm.

That is true regarding those file types... tho I personally recommend not opening ANYTHING if you don't know what it is. Just about any file that can be run or opened can contain a virus attached to it. Years back, you could just say not to open the basic 3 executable files (com/exe/bat) and you're safe. Now, you really can't just say that. You can get viruses from just about anything. If you don't know what it is, don't open it. Period. smile

So true so true, i once used to say how jpg's were save to view cause they were only pictures, until the alert came out about the buffer overrun bug in the display mech for em.

Oh and bizzarely my win2kserver install shows me the extentions , i did a install on another pc just to test it, wonder if its because its a server edition? havent tried the 2003 yet.

That's why he's got the Pooh-Bah title... he's a crazy old bear. laugh

It probably would show the extensions on a server install since they expect you to know what you're doing on a network. smile
